Milanese, nato nel 1956, si è laureato con lode in Economia e Commercio all’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano nel 1979.
Dal 2000 è Professore ordinario di Statistica all’Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca. Insegna al Dipartimento di Statistica e metodi quantitativi della stessa università. Dopo aver conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in statistica metodologica nel 1986, ha insegnato nelle università di Brescia, Milano e Milano Bicocca. Suoi argomenti di studio sono i modelli con variabili latenti, le misture di regressione, il capitale umano, l’econometria sanitaria.
Ha promosso la nascita e diretto dal 1997 al 2005 il Centro di Ricerca Interuniversitario sui Servizi di Pubblica Utilità alla persona (CRISP) del cui Comitato scientifico è oggi membro.
Ha fondato e presiede la Fondazione per la Sussidiarietà, un think tank nato nel 2002 con lo scopo di fare della cultura sussidiaria un valore condiviso e un fermento di iniziative sociali, economiche e istituzionali.
La Fondazione realizza attività di ricerca, formative ed editoriali su temi sociali, economici e politici, in particolare, sussidiarietà, terzo settore, welfare. Il principale lavoro di ricerca è il Rapporto sulla sussidiarietà.
È tra gli organizzatori dell’annuale Meeting per l’amicizia fra i popoli (Meeting di Rimini), una kermesse estiva tra le più frequentate in Europa, che propone incontri, dibattiti, mostre, eventi musicali, letterari, sportivi.
Ha fondato e presieduto fino al 2003 la Compagnia delle Opere, associazione d’imprese ispirata alla Dottrina sociale della Chiesa.
È autore di numerosi articoli e saggi su temi socio-economici, in particolare per ciò che riguarda sussidiarietà, non profit, lavoro, educazione (character skill).
Nel 2005 ha ricevuto la Medaglia d’Oro della Commissione Nazionale per la Promozione della Cultura Italiana all'Estero.
Il 7 dicembre 2020 ha ricevuto l’Ambrogino d’oro, la principale onorificenza conferita dal Comune di Milano, che ha così commentato: “Il premio che ricevo è un premio alla cultura sussidiaria, al fermento sociale e civile che, oggi più che mai, ha bisogno di esprimere la sua vitalità”.
Giorgio Vittadini is Full Professor of Statistics, at the University of Milan Bicocca – Department of Statistics and Quantitative Methods.
Born in Milano in 1956, he graduated with honors in Economics and Commerce at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan in 1979.
Since 2000 he has been Full Professor of Statistics at the University of Milan-Bicocca. He teaches at the Department of Statistics and Quantitative Methods of the same university. After obtaining his PhD in methodological statistics in 1986, he taught at the universities of Brescia, Milan and Milano Bicocca. His topics of study are models with latent variables, regression mixtures, human capital, health econometrics.
He founded and directed from 1997 to 2005 the Interuniversity Research Center on Public Utility Services to the person (CRISP) of which Scientific Committee he is now a member.
In 2002 he founded and currently directs the Foundation for Subsidiarity, a think tank with the aim of developing a culture of subsidiary as a ferment of social, economic and institutional initiatives. The Foundation carries out research, training and editorial initiatives. It publishes the annual Subsidiarity Report.
He is one of the organizers of the annual Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples (Rimini Meeting), one of the most popular events in Europe.
He founded and presided over the Compagnia delle Opere until 2003, a business association inspired by the social doctrine of the Catholic Church.
He is the author of numerous articles and essays on socio-economic topics, in particular, subsidiarity, non-profit, work, education (“character skill”).
In 2005 he received the Gold Medal of the National Commission for the Promotion of Italian Culture Abroad.
On December 7, 2020, he was awarded the Ambrogino d'oro, the most prestigious honor bestowed by the Municipality of Milan. In his acceptance speech he spoke about the importance of the principal of subsidiarity, "The award I receive today, is an award to promote a culture of subsidiary, as a social and civil ferment which, today more than ever, needs to express its vitality”.
